In this three hour online class I will take you through the stages to developing a portrait painting in oils using photographic reference. This is a streamed online course and you will gain access to the entire class as soon as you sign up.  You will have lifetime access to the class so you can return to the material again and again!

You will learn how to select a good photo to work from, how to tone your canvas before you begin and how to use oil paints so that they’re fun and easy. I’ll start by walking you through measuring techniques that will ensure that you get accurate proportions and a good structure to your portrait as you block in your underpainting.

We will utilize warm and cool lighting to achieve dynamic colors. You will learn how to achieve a better likeness as well as how to paint convincing flesh tones. Lessons cover the structure of the face and features, as well as value, edges and modeling with color temperature.

The beginner will learn fundamental principles such as how to mix colors and render form modeling. The more advanced student will discover how to take their work to the next level and achieve the finish that they desire.

Kristy Gordon has been teaching and conducting painting workshops since 2008. She is an adjunct professor at the New York Academy of Art and has taught at numerous schools and academies including the National Academy in NYC, and The Academy of Realist Art in Ottawa and Boston. Gordon has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions throughout Canada, the United States, Europe and China. Her work has earned numerous awards including the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant and an Exceptional Merit Award from the Portrait Society of America. She has been widely featured in magazines, art publications, radio and television shows, including International Artist, Fine Art Connoisseur, The Artist’s Magazine, Southwest Art and Bravo!’s Star Portraits. Kristy’s paintings hang in more than 600 collections worldwide including the Government of Ontario Art Collection and The Clearing House in NYC.
