This week I’ve been thinking about all the classes I took and struggles I’ve been through to finally feel satisfied when I paint an eye.

These are mistakes that I used to make too, and when I stopped doing these simple things all my paintings improved!

One mistake many artists make is using pure white for the whites of the eyes. In reality, the whites are a dark gray tone, similar to the surrounding skin tone but cooler.
Another common error is relying on harsh outlines around the eyes. To create a more natural and realistic appearance I like to soften those lines into forms.
Don’t overlook the lower eyelids! Many artists forget to add thickness to them, but this simple detail can make a world of difference in adding dimension to the eyes.
