Art I Saw in NYC This Week: Alicia Brown at Winston Wachter

It’s that time of year again! We’re entering into the peak gallery season in New York City, so all the galleries are presenting their very best artists and there are openings every week!  This week I attended the opening for Alicia Brown’s solo show at Winston Wachter and was blown away! Check out the video below to see her amazing paintings from her exhibition “Coming to ‘Merica: Invasive Species.”

In my Visionary Artist Master Program this week we delved into a crucial topic: the importance of knowing your world as an artist. It’s essential for artists to be well-informed about the work that others are creating. One of the best ways to stay in the loop is by attending art openings. There, you not only get to see what’s being created but also have the opportunity to engage with fellow artists, discussing the ideas that are currently shaping the art world.

It’s worth noting that there are many different art worlds out there. Even in smaller towns, like the one I grew up in, there’s a vibrant community of artists. Connecting with that community happens through interaction. One of the main reasons I moved to New York City was to immerse myself in the art scene, to witness and be influenced by the incredible art being made and showcased here. But even during my time away from the city, I stay informed by watching YouTube videos about the latest exhibitions in NYC. One of my favorite channels for this is James Kalm, who consistently posts videos of the art shows he attends in NYC.

Staying informed isn’t just about the present; it’s also about understanding art history. When I was starting out as a painter, I found Sister Wendy Beckett’s “Story of Painting,” to be an incredible resource. It’s actually now available on YouTube as well! This series is not only educational but also incredibly entertaining. It takes you through the main art movements of the Western Canon, providing a deeper appreciation for the evolution of art.

There are so many fun and interesting ways to stay informed and connected in the art community. Whether it’s attending gallery openings, watching insightful YouTube videos, exploring art history, or diving into art publications, there’s always something new and inspiring to discover.

Check out my LATEST PODCAST with Peter Drake, the Provost of the New York Academy of Art, where we discuss the importance of staying informed as an artist!
