How to Find Artistic Inspiration: A Trip to the MET!

Finding inspiration is crucial for artists, as it fuels our creative process. While some artists naturally discover inspiration, others face challenges in this regard. However, there are various ways to spark creativity and avoid artist’s block, including my personal favorite—trips to museums and art galleries!

Here are some common methods professional artists use to find ideas:

  1. Visit art museums or galleries:Go to galleries and museums with questions in mind about art that you’re currently working on and you will find the answers leap off the walls at you! Some museums even allow painting using their artworks as references.
  2. Look through art books: Books provide a vast source of inspiration. Exploring art books in libraries or museums can lead to unexpected discoveries.
  3. Sketch people from life: Observing and sketching people in their everyday lives helps artists understand the human form and behavior. It’s a great way to capture emotions and develop artistic skills.
  4. Get out of the studio: Artists find inspiration by venturing outside their studios, whether it’s going to a coffee shop, strolling in a park, or simply observing people. New environments offer fresh perspectives.
  5. Engage in critique: Receiving feedback from others and critiquing the work of fellow artists can provide new insights and inspire artistic growth.
  6. Reflect on old work: Reviewing previous ideas and unfinished pieces can generate new inspiration. Sometimes revisiting and repurposing older work can spark new ideas.
  7. Connect with other artists: Engaging in conversations with other artists and seeking their viewpoints can lead to new ideas and collaborations.

To overcome artistic inspiration hurdles, consider the following tips:

  1. Find inspiration in your own life: Recognize activities or locations that energize and stimulate you, and seek them out when feeling lost for ideas.
  2. Maintain a sketchbook: Document your artistic ideas by brainstorming with “thumbnails,” which a loose compositional sketches. Past entries can serve as inspiration.
  3. Create a vision board: Collect images representing your artistic aspirations. You can cut images out from magazines or just draw yourself experiencing all your art dreams.
  4. Take time for reflection: Step away from your work, relax, and allow your mind to wander. Sometimes, inspiration comes when we’re not actively seeking it.
  5. Spend time in nature: Walking in the park or immersing yourself in the natural world can offer inspiration and refresh your creativity.

Exercise your creative brain through sketching or painting exercises such as intuitive painting, creating thumbnails or still life observation.

Remember that art-making should be a pleasurable and rewarding experience. Focus on your motivation and artistic goals to reignite inspiration. Create for the sake of creating, and let everything else fall into place.

Knowing your world is the final piece in the five-step framework that I’m teaching in the Visionary Artist Master Program (VAMP), for finding your voice as an artist.  It’s essential that we as artists understand the context that we’re creating in—the history and the ongoing artistic dialogue of the language that we’re using, such as painting, drawing or sculpture.  I actually was going to close registration for VAMP last week but a couple people emailed me really sweetly asking for an extension, so the registration is still open, at least for today!  To learn more about VAMP click HERE!
