How To Get Connections in the Art World

Building connections a topic that’s essential for any artist looking to thrive in the art world. Whether you’re an emerging artist or a professional, connecting with others in the art community can open doors you never thought possible. So take a look at the video I made about how to foster genuine connections that enrich both your art journey and the people you meet.

1. Give Value and Be Patient: The first rule of art world connections is to lead with value. When approaching other artists or gallery owners, resist the urge to immediately ask for something. Instead, focus on adding value to their lives. Comment on their work, engage with their content, and show genuine interest. People remember those who genuinely appreciate and support them.

2. Share Their Work on Social Media: Instagram is a powerful tool in the art world. Show your appreciation by sharing their work on your IG stories. But remember, keep their work on stories, not your main feed. Your feed showcases your work, while stories are a great place to spotlight others. It’s a win-win – you’re showcasing their talent while building your connection.

3. Intention Matters: Set your intention. Know who you want to connect with and why. Create a vision board or a list of people you’d like to meet. It’s incredible how the universe works – sometimes the people you’ve been dreaming of meeting will cross your path unexpectedly.

4. The Power of Restraint: While it’s tempting to ask for favors or opportunities, resist the urge until the time is right. Instead, focus on nurturing the connection. Give before you receive. This approach demonstrates your sincerity and commitment to the relationship.

5. Show Appreciation: Never underestimate the impact of a simple “thank you.” Express gratitude for every gesture, no matter how small. It shows that you value their time and effort.

6. Connect as People, Not Just Professionals: When building connections, see beyond the surface. Connect on a personal level. Find common interests, shared experiences, or similar perspectives. Authentic relationships go beyond business transactions.

7. Attend Gallery Opening: Attend openings and events to show your support and become a familiar face at the gallery. However, save the meaningful conversations for later. Engage with gallery owners during the week, when they have more time to engage in a genuine conversation.

8. Pay Attention to Signs: Hold your goals close but wait for the right moment to act. Sometimes, the universe provides an opening when you least expect it. Be prepared to seize these opportunities when they come.

9. Be Low Maintenance: When reaching out via email or in person, keep your communication brief and concise. Galleries and artists are often busy, so respect their time and attention.

10. Be Kind to Everyone: Remember, the art world is a community. Be kind to everyone you encounter, from fellow artists to assistants. The people you meet on your way up could be the same people you encounter on your way down. Treat everyone with respect and kindness.

Remember, it’s not just about networking; it’s about fostering genuine relationships that elevate both your artistic journey and the lives of those around you. So go out there, connect, support, and make lasting connections that will enrich your artistic endeavors in ways you never thought possible.
