This week I’ve been thinking about the importance of finishing our art because I finally completed and delivered all the paintings for my upcoming solo show. When I was finding my artistic voice one of the most important things I did was force myself to finish what I start. From doing that I learned so much about my own creative process and what strategies I would use to bring a painting to completion.

The War of Art book by Steven Pressfield
Each artist has to discover for themselves the tools and resources they will use to be able to bring an idea from their imagination to a harmonious completion. One of the best ways we can learn this is by forcing ourselves to ring a work all the way to completion.
For me I often find that the beginning stages of a painting I feel very excited and feel like things are going great. Then I get to the middle phase, and suddenly everything seems to suck. It can be hard to pull a painting through to the end, especially when I feel so disheartened in the middle phase.
I find it helpful to repeat to myself over and over “it doesn’t have to be perfect it just has to be finished,” to get me through. Of course we strive for excellence as we create, but perfection can be a real blocker.
