I used to struggle so much to paint hair. I’d paint a reasonable looking face, then laboriously try to paint every strand of hair perfectly but it would always come out looking stringy and weird.
RESOURCES MENTIONED
Grainer Brushes (I like all three sizes listed in this supplies list)
Luckily, since I had a background in animation I had been introduced to these craft brushes when I was painting backgrounds for Ren and Stimpy. The brushes were called “grainer brushes.” They have some long hairs and some short hairs and I used them to paint wood grain and grass.
Then I figured out that they actually easily paint absolutely perfect hair! The trick to using them for hair is to use zig-zagging brushstrokes that cut across the forms of the head, which is something I show in detail in my hair painting online course. You can use them for all textures of hair, from straight, wavy and curly hair. For this painting I wiggled the brush from side to side a little to create the soft texture of the curly hair.
